What is Teratoma of the Brain?

A teratoma of the brain is a rare tumour that arises from germ cells, which are the cells that go on to form eggs in females and sperm in males. Teratomas are unique in that they can contain a variety of tissue types, such as hair, teeth, bone, and even complex organs. While teratomas more commonly occur in the ovaries, testes, and sacrococcygeal region, their presence in the brain is exceedingly rare.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a Teratoma of the Brain can vary depending on its size and location but might include:

  • Persistent or worsening headaches.
  • Nausea or vomiting, especially in the morning.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • Vision or hearing disturbances.
  • Neurological deficits, like muscle weakness or numbness in parts of the body.
  • Changes in behaviour or personality.
  • Fatigue or lethargy.

Disease Aetiology (Causes)

The exact cause of brain teratomas remains unknown. They are believed to originate from misplaced germ cells during embryonic development.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Teratoma of the Brain typically entails:

  • Neurological Examination: This assesses neurological function and pinpoints symptoms.
  • Imaging Studies: MRI scans provide detailed images and are usually the preferred method for visualising brain tumours. CT scans may also be utilised.
  • Biopsy: Taking a sample of tissue from the tumour for microscopic examination. This confirms the diagnosis and categorises the type of teratoma (mature or immature).

Treatment

Treatment options for Teratoma of the Brain encompass:

  • Surgery: The primary treatment modality. The objective is to excise as much of the tumour as feasible without jeopardising critical brain functions.
  • Chemotherapy: Often utilised if the teratoma is immature or if surgery did not remove the entire tumour.
  • Radiation Therapy: Might be used post-surgery, especially if complete removal wasn’t achieved.

What support can we give for Teratoma of the Brain?
