What is Chordoma of the Bone?

Chordoma of the bone is a rare type of cancer that arises from remnants of the notochord, a structure present during embryonic development. Chordomas typically develop within the bones of the skull base and spine. Being slow-growing tumours, they may exist for years before diagnosis, but they can be invasive and challenging to treat completely.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a Chordoma of the Bone depend largely on its location but can include:

  • Pain or numbness in the affected area.
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction if the spine is involved.
  • Headaches or vision disturbances if located at the skull base.
  • Difficulty swallowing or hoarseness.
  • Loss of balance or vertigo.
  • Neurological deficits.

Disease Aetiology (Causes)

The precise cause of chordomas remains unidentified. Genetic mutations have been observed in some patients, but a direct inherited pattern is not established.

Diagnosis

For diagnosing Chordoma of the Bone:

  • Physical Examination: This identifies any noticeable neurological or physical symptoms.
  • Imaging Studies: MRI and CT scans are instrumental in detecting and determining the extent of the tumour.
  • Biopsy: Taking a tissue sample of the suspected area for microscopic analysis confirms the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment strategies for Chordoma of the Bone include:

  • Surgery: The primary treatment, aiming to remove as much of the tumour as possible without damaging surrounding structures.
  • Radiation Therapy: Proton therapy or stereotactic radiosurgery can be particularly effective given the tumour’s sensitivity.
  • Chemotherapy: Generally, chordomas aren’t highly responsive to chemotherapy, but it might be considered for aggressive or recurrent cases.

What support can we give for Chordoma of the Bone?

Chordoma of the Bone is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Chordoma of the Bone, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
