What is Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma?
Primary central nervous system lymphoma is a type of cancer in which cancer cells form in the lymph tissues of the brain and spinal cord. It usually develops in people with immunodeficiency, especially in people with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The Primary central nervous system lymphoma can originate from the brain, spinal cord, meninges, and eye. Lymphoma is a type of cancer in which cancer cells result from the rapid, uncontrolled division of certain types of white blood cells and form in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system consists of lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, tonsils, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow.
Disease Etiology
There is no well-known cause, but it is common in people with HIV (Human immune deficiency virus) and Epstein virus infection. It is more prevalent in older adults in their fifth or sixth decade of life.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Headache
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Double vision
- Vertigo
- Seizures (sudden uncontrolled changes in movements, feelings, or level of consciousness)
- One-sided vision loss
- Progressive impairment in memory and thinking
- Numbness feeling on the face
- In advanced cases, the patient may suffer from fever, night sweats, and weight loss
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-scan (computerized tomography), PET-scan (Positron emission tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumor.
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Lumber Puncture
- Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination
Treatment
Radiation therapy chemotherapy and targeted immunotherapy are the main treatment options for primary cerebral lymphoma.
