What is Adamantinoma?
Adamantinoma is a rare cancer of the lower leg bones, especially the middle part of the tibia. It is a very rare cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all bone cancers, with only 300 cases reported to date. The average age of adamantinoma development is 20-40 years.
Disease Etiology (Causes)
There is no well-known cause.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Prolonged and constant pain in the leg
- Palpable (touchable/felt able) mass in the middle part of the lower leg
- Curved shaped appearance of the leg
- Swelling of the leg
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- Imaging diagnostic techniques such as X-Ray, CT-scan, and PET-scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour Biopsy
Treatment
Surgical resection (Surgical removal of the tumour or affected part along with the removal of some healthy surrounding tissues) is the main treatment. In some cases where the tumour is spread to a large area of the leg, amputation is considered the right method of treatment. Other treatment options are radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is only prescribed in metastatic cases of adamantinoma such as in the case of lung metastasis.
