What is Adamantinoma?

Adamantinoma is a rare cancer of the lower leg bones, especially the middle part of the tibia. It is a very rare cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all bone cancers, with only 300 cases reported to date. The average age of adamantinoma development is 20-40 years.

Disease Etiology (Causes)

There is no well-known cause.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • Prolonged and constant pain in the leg
  • Palpable (touchable/felt able) mass in the middle part of the lower leg
  • Curved shaped appearance of the leg
  • Swelling of the leg

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • Imaging diagnostic techniques such as X-Ray, CT-scan, and PET-scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
  • Tumour Biopsy

Treatment

Surgical resection (Surgical removal of the tumour or affected part along with the removal of some healthy surrounding tissues) is the main treatment. In some cases where the tumour is spread to a large area of the leg, amputation is considered the right method of treatment. Other treatment options are radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is only prescribed in metastatic cases of adamantinoma such as in the case of lung metastasis.

What Support can we Give for Adamantinoma?

Adamantinoma is rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Adamantinoma we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
