What is Precursor T-lymphoblastic Leukemia?
It is an aggressive type of white blood cell cancer (leukemia) in which too many immature T-cells are found in the bone marrow and blood. T cells or T lymphocytes are part of the immune system that fights off infections and foreign disease-causing agents.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause; however, certain genetic mutations and risk factors, such as exposure to certain radiation, previous radiation therapy, and previous chemotherapy for cancer treatment, are thought to be responsible for the development of a precursor of T-lymphoblastic leukemia.
Disease Epidemiology
It accounts for approximately 15% of childhood cancers and 25% of adult cancers among all acute lymphoblastic leukemia cases.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Mass in the mid of the chest
- Fever
- Night sweats
- Weight loss
- Pain in the bones
- Pain in the joints
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- Urine complete examination (UCE) to detect any urinary tract infection and blood in the urine
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Liver function tests (LFT’s)
- Imaging techniques like CT scan, USG, MRI, CT-chest, and X-ray to assess the site, size, extent, and distant metastasis of the tumor.
- Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination
- Bone marrow biopsy
- Immunohistochemistry
Treatment
Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and stem cell transplantation are the main treatment option.
What support can we give for Precursor T-lymphoblastic Leukemia?
Precursor T-lymphoblastic Leukemia is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. We provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from a rare cancer such as Precursor T-lymphoblastic Leukemia, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
