What is Splenic Marginal Zone-b Cell Lymphoma?
It is a rare type of white blood cell cancer that results from the uncontrolled division of B cells or B lymphocytes and affects the spleen, bone marrow, and blood. B lymphocyte or B-cell is a type of white blood cells. Neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, T cells, and B cells are types of white blood cells. Lymphocytes (white blood cells) help to fight infection and microorganisms that enter the body.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause; however, certain genetic mutations and risk factors, such as exposure to certain radiation, previous radiation therapy, and previous chemotherapy for cancer treatment, are thought to be responsible for the development of splenic marginal zone B-cell lymphoma.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Enlargement of the spleen
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Fever
- Excessive sweating at night while sleeping
- Unexpected or unexplained weight loss
- Constant tiredness
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic techniques can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- Blood test such as Complete blood count (CBC)
- Diagnostic imaging techniques such as USG, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumor.
- Skin or lymph nodes marrow biopsy
Treatment
Splenectomy (surgical removal of the spleen) is the main treatment option, but chemotherapy is recommended along with surgical removal of the spleen in cases where cancer has spread to the blood and bone marrow.
What support can we give for Splenic Marginal Zone B-cell Lymphoma?
Splenic Marginal Zone B-cell Lymphoma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. We provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from a rare cancer such as Splenic Marginal Zone B-cell Lymphoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
