What is Pleomorphic liposarcoma?
Pleomorphic liposarcoma is a rare subtype of fat cell cancer in the body. It is a rare and very malignant type of tumor that usually arises from fat cells and deep soft tissues of the upper and lower extremities (shoulder, arms, legs, and thighs). Other frequent sites for the development of pleomorphic liposarcoma are deep soft tissues of the abdomen and chest. Pleomorphic liposarcoma shows a poor prognosis (probable course of the disease) with a 5-year survival rate of 59%.
Disease Etiology (causes)
There is no well-known cause; however certain chromosomal abnormalities are responsible for the development of pleomorphic liposarcoma.
Disease Epidemiology
Pleomorphic liposarcoma is rare cancer and accounts for approximately 5-10% of all liposarcomas (soft tissue cancers). It usually develops in the elderly, whose average age is between 50 -70 years.
Signs and symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- A firm and rapidly growing mass or lump in the arm, leg, abdomen, or chest.
- In more than 50% of cases, pleomorphic liposarcoma can spread to the lungs, which can lead to death.
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-scan (computerized tomography), PET-scan (Positron emission tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumor.
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination
Treatment
Surgical resection (surgical removal of cancerous tissue along with some healthy surrounding tissue) of the tumor is the main treatment option. However, in cases where the tumor exceeds 5-8 cm, surgical removal of the tumor is recommended along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
What Support can we Give for Pleomorphic Liposarcoma?
Pleomorphic Liposarcoma is rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Pleomorphic Liposarcoma we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
