What is Neurocytoma of the Brain?

Neurocytoma is a very rare and benign tumor of the brain that originates from a thin triangular membrane that separates the ventricles of the brain. Four brain ventricles contain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear and colorless fluid which present in the brain and spinal cord and provides nutrition, protection and helps in the removal of waste from the brain and spinal cord.

Disease Etiology (Causes)

There is no definite well-known cause; however certain genetic mutations are responsible for the development of Neurocytoma of the brain.

Disease Epidemiology

These are rare tumors that account for 0.1 to 0.5% of all brain tumors. Neurocytoma Cases are more common in people of Asian descent. They usually develop in young people between the ages of 20 and 30.

Signs and Symptoms

These Neurocytoma tumors can block or obstructs the flow of cerebrospinal fluid which generates pressures symptoms such as

  • Headache
  • A feeling of tightness around the head
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Altered level of consciousness
  • Blurred vision or inability to see in the specific area of the visual field
  • loss of vision
  • the sudden appearance of unstable or unsteady gait
  • Loss of memory
  • Weakness or paralysis of one side of the body
  • Altered behavior

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-scan (computerized tomography), PET-scan (Positron emission tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumor.
  • Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination

Treatment

In early, localized cases of cerebral astrocytoma, surgical removal of the brain tumor is the main treatment option. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are the main treatment options for advanced and highly malignant cerebral astrocytoma.
