What Is Moderately-Differentiated Nonkeratinizing Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma?
Moderately-differentiated nonkeratinizing nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a specific subtype of cancer that originates in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose. This classification is based on the tumour’s cellular characteristics, indicating a moderate level of differentiation where the cancer cells are somewhat similar to normal nasopharyngeal cells but do not form keratin. Nonkeratinizing NPC is more commonly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, a significant risk factor for the disease.
Symptoms
Symptoms of moderately-differentiated nonkeratinizing NPC may include:
- A lump in the neck due to swollen lymph nodes, often the first sign
- Nasal blockage or congestion
- Ear problems, such as hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or a feeling of fullness
- Sore throat or difficulty swallowing
- Nosebleeds
- Headaches
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
While the exact cause of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is not fully understood, several factors are known to increase the risk:
- Infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)
- Genetic predisposition
- Consumption of certain preserved foods high in nitrates
- Exposure to certain chemicals or environmental factors
Diagnosis
Diagnosing moderately-differentiated nonkeratinizing NPC involves:
- Physical examination, including endoscopy to visualize the nasopharynx
- Imaging tests such as MRI, CT scans, and PET scans to determine the extent of the cancer
- Biopsy of the nasopharyngeal tissue for histopathological examination
- EBV DNA levels may also be measured, as EBV is closely associated with NPC
Treatment
Treatment for moderately-differentiated nonkeratinizing NPC typically includes:
- Radiation therapy, often the primary treatment due to the sensitivity of NPC to radiation. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is commonly used to target the tumour while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
- Chemotherapy is frequently used in combination with radiation therapy, especially for advanced stages or to reduce the risk of metastasis.
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are being explored in clinical trials and may be options based on the tumour’s specific genetic markers.
- Follow-up care is crucial for monitoring response to treatment, managing side effects, and detecting any recurrence early.
What support can we give for the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Moderately-Differentiated Nonkeratinizing?
Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Moderately-Differentiated Nonkeratinizing is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma, Moderately-Differentiated Nonkeratinizing, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
