What is Low-Grade Mucinous Ovarian Cancer?

Low-grade mucinous ovarian cancer is a rare type of tumour that arises from the epithelial cells of the ovary. Mucinous cancer cells are large and filled with fluid and mucous. These are rare cancers and account for only 2-3% of ovary cancers.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of low-grade mucinous cancer of the ovary. A positive association has also been observed between cigarette smoking and the development of low-grade mucinous ovarian cancer.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • A lump or mass in the abdomen
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Bloating (swelling of the stomach due to accumulation of gas)
  • Constant feeling of tiredness

Diagnosis

Following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make the diagnosis. These are

  • Complete blood count ( CBC)
  • Serum tumour markers
  • Imaging techniques like ultrasonography (USG), CT-scan, MRI, and X-ray to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
  • Pelvic examination through per-speculum examination of the vagina, cervix, and ovaries. A speculum is a gynecological instrument used to visualize the vaginal wall, cervix, uterus, and ovaries to detect any abnormality.
  • CA-125
  • Serum B-HCG levels

Treatment

Surgical removal of the tumour is the first-line treatment for localized ovarian tumours. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is the treatment option for metastatic cases of low-grade mucinous tumour. Hormonal therapy also provides greater benefit with lesser toxicity in the case of low-grade mucinous carcinoma.
