What is an Immature Teratoma of the Ovary?
Immature teratoma of the ovary is an uncommon kind of ovarian germ cell (egg-derived) tumour that makes up less than 1% of all ovarian malignancies. The microscopic analysis of the embryonic teratoma revealed that it was made up of all three types of embryonal germ cell layer cells: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. It predominately develops in young females.Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of immature teratoma of the ovary.Signs and Symptoms
In the early stages of immature teratoma of the ovary, the patient does not show any signs and symptoms, as the tumour progresses, the patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are- A mass or lump in the abdomen
- Pain in the abdomen in a few cases
- Bleeding from the vagina between menstrual cycles and after menopause (permanent cessation of menstruation after the age of 49 years).
Diagnosis
Following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make the diagnosis. These are- Complete blood count ( CBC)
- Serum tumour markers
- Imaging techniques like ultrasonography (USG), CT-scan, MRI, and X-ray to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Pelvic examination through per-speculum examination of the vagina, cervix, and ovaries. A speculum is a gynecological instrument used to visualize the vaginal wall, cervix, uterus, and ovaries to detect any abnormality.

- Serum B-HCG levels
- Alpha-fetoprotein levels (AFP)
