What is Heart Cancer (Primary Cardiac Tumour)?
Heart cancer, also known as primary cardiac tumour, is an extremely rare form of cancer that originates in the heart. The most common type of primary cardiac tumour is a myxoma, which is usually benign, but malignant heart cancers, like sarcomas, can also occur. Due to their rarity and varied presentation, these tumours can be challenging to diagnose and treat.
Symptoms
The symptoms of heart cancer can vary significantly depending on the size and location of the tumour but may include:
- Shortness of breath, especially when lying down or during physical activity.
- Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
- Chest pain or discomfort.
- Fatigue and weakness.
- Swelling in the legs or abdomen.
- Fainting or dizziness.
- Unexplained weight loss.
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The causes of primary cardiac tumours are largely unknown. Like other cancers, mutations in the DNA of heart cells may contribute to their development, but specific risk factors are not well established.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing heart cancer involves a series of tests:
- Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart to visualize the tumour.
- MRI or CT Scan: These imaging tests provide detailed pictures of the heart and can help in assessing the tumour’s size and impact.
- Biopsy: In some cases, a tissue sample from the tumour may be obtained to determine its nature.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Chest X-rays: To check for any abnormalities in the heart’s rhythm and structure.
Treatment
Treatment for heart cancer depends on the type and extent of the tumour:
- Surgery: The primary treatment for most cardiac tumours, aiming to remove the tumour completely.
- Radiation Therapy and Chemotherapy: These may be used in the case of malignant tumours, depending on their type and responsiveness to treatment.
- Medication: To manage symptoms like arrhythmias or heart failure.
What support can we give for Heart Cancer (Primary Cardiac Tumour)?
Heart Cancer (Primary Cardiac Tumour) is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Heart Cancer (Primary Cardiac Tumour), we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
