What is Fibrosarcoma?
Fibrosarcoma is a rare form of cancer that originates in the fibrous tissues of the body, which include the tendons, ligaments, and the fibrous connective tissue that surrounds muscles and organs. This type of cancer is known for its aggressive growth and can occur anywhere in the body, but it is most commonly found in the legs, arms, and trunk.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Fibrosarcoma can vary depending on the tumour’s location but generally include:
- A palpable lump or swelling which may grow over time.
- Pain or soreness in the affected area, particularly if the tumour presses against nerves or muscles.
- The restricted movement if the tumour is located near a joint.
- In some cases, systemic symptoms like fatigue or weight loss.
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of Fibrosarcoma is not well understood. However, some risk factors have been identified:
- Genetic disorders, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome.
- Prior radiation therapy.
- Chronic inflammation or irritation in the area.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing Fibrosarcoma involves a combination of methods:
- Physical Examination: To identify any lumps or abnormal swelling.
- Imaging Tests: Including MRI, CT scans, and X-rays to determine the size and extent of the tumour.
- Biopsy: Taking a sample of the tumour for laboratory analysis is crucial for a definitive diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment for Fibrosarcoma typically includes:
- Surgery: The primary treatment method, aims to remove the tumour along with some surrounding healthy tissue.
- Radiation Therapy: Often used in conjunction with surgery to target any residual cancer cells.
- Chemotherapy: May be used for more aggressive types of Fibrosarcoma or if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
What support can we give for Fibrosarcoma?
Fibrosarcoma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Fibrosarcoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
