What is a Carcinoid Tumour of The Appendix?
Carcinoid tumour of the appendix is a type of neuroendocrine tumour of the appendix. It is the most common type of cancer in the appendix. It approximately accounts for half of the appendix tumour. Carcinoid tumours of the appendix show a good prognosis (likely course of the disease) at early stages. It is slightly more prevalent in women than in men.
What is the Neuroendocrine Tumour?
A neuroendocrine tumour is an uncontrolled multiplication or division of cells that release hormones into the blood in response to a signal from the nervous system.
Disease Etiology (Causes)
There is no well-known cause; however, it is believed that a particular gene mutation (mistaken gene change) is responsible for the development of carcinoid tumours in the appendix.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Usually, a carcinoid tumour of the appendix causes no sign and symptoms
In only 10% of cases, it can cause
- Severe and constant pain in the abdomen
- Distension of the abdomen
- Abdominal bloating
- Pain in the right lower part of the abdomen
- Feeling of fullness even after eating a small amount of food
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
Diagnosis
A diagnosis can be made through by
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Blood coagulation profile
- BUN ( blood urea and nitrogen)
- Serum creatinine
- Liver function tests LFT’s
- Amylase and lipase values
- Imaging techniques like CT-scan, MRI, PET-scan, X-Ray, and USG to detect the site and size of the tumour.
- Endoscopy
- Preoperative biopsy
Treatment
In earlier cases, when the tumour is located in the appendix, surgical removal of the cancerous part or appendix is the most definite and common treatment. In very rare cases, a carcinoid tumour of the appendix spreads to nearby organs, as it is a slow-growing tumour.
