What is the Atypical Lipomatous Tumour?
The atypical lipomatous tumour is low-grade cancer that rarely spreads to the other parts of the body but has a tendency to recur after the treatment. It is a mesenchymal tumour composed of mature fat cells and stromal cells. The most common sites for an atypical lipomatous tumour are the thighs, abdomen, chest, head, neck, spermatic cord, and skin.
Disease Epidemiology
It is the most common fat cell cancer. The average age of development of the disease is 40-60 years. It is rare in children.
Disease Etiology (Causes)
There is no well-known cause behind the development of an atypical lipomatous tumour.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms vary depending on the area of the body.
- The symptoms of hip or thigh atypical lipomatous tumour are mass or tumour in the hip or thigh region along with pain in the leg.
- Retroperitoneal (abdominal) atypical lipomatous tumour may present with the pain or feeling of fullness in the abdomen.
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis these are
- Diagnostic imaging techniques such as USG, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour biopsy
- Histo-pathological examination
Treatment
Surgical resection (surgical removal of the tumour part of the skin along with the removal of some surrounding healthy tissues) of the tumour is the main treatment option.
