What is Anaplastic Ependymoma of the brain?

Anaplastic ependymoma is a type of brain and spinal cord tumour that results from uncontrolled division or multiplication of glial cells in the brain. Anaplastic ependymoma is a tumour that arises from the glial cells lining the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of anaplastic ependymoma of the brain.

Disease Epidemiology

Anaplastic ependymoma can occur at any age, in children it usually develops in the brain while in adults it usually develops in the spinal cord. These tumours are more common in males than females.

Signs and Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of the tumour depend upon the site of origination and the size of the tumour. Most of the symptoms develop due to the increased pressure of the tumour at the site of its origination in the brain or due to the blockage of the fluid-filled spaces in the brain. Common symptoms of the anaplastic ependymoma of the brain are;

  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Drowsiness
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Loss of vision
  • Constant feeling of tiredness
  • Paralysis of the one side of the body if tumour develop in that area of the brain that deals with the movements of the body
  • Numbness and weakness of the arms and legs
  • Temporary twitching or stiffness of the muscles

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are;

  • Using other imaging techniques such as CNS (central nervous system) USG (ultrasonography), X-rays, computed tomography, MRI, and PET to determine the characteristics of tumours, their location, size, and the extent to the regional and distant parts of the body.
  • Tumour Biopsy
  • Spinal fluid aspiration cytology
  • Tumour markers test

Treatment

Surgical removal of the tumour is the main treatment option. However, in advanced metastatic cases, Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the recommended treatment options.
