What is Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma?
Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare and aggressive form of rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that develops from skeletal muscle cells. It is named ‘alveolar’ due to the patterns of cells resembling small air sacs (alveoli) seen under the microscope. This type of cancer is more common in adolescents and young adults and is known for its rapid growth and high potential for spreading to other parts of the body.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma can vary significantly depending on the tumour’s location but may include:
- A noticeable lump or swelling, which may or may not be painful.
- Pain or discomfort in the affected area.
- Symptoms related to the tumour’s location, such as breathing difficulties if the tumour is near the lungs.
- Fatigue and weight loss.
- Fever or night sweats.
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma is not well understood, but it is thought to involve genetic mutations. Unlike some other forms of cancer, it is not typically associated with environmental factors or lifestyle choices.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma involves:
- Medical History and Physical Examination: To identify symptoms and any palpable masses.
- Imaging Tests: Such as MRI, CT scan, or PET scan, to determine the size and spread of the tumour.
- Biopsy: Taking a tissue sample for microscopic examination to confirm the presence of cancer cells.
- Bone Marrow Biopsy: In some cases, to check if the cancer has spread to the bone marrow.
Treatment
Treatment for Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma typically includes a combination of:
- Surgery: To remove the tumour, often followed by reconstruction, depending on the tumour’s location and size.
- Chemotherapy: A mainstay of treatment to address both the primary tumour and potential metastases.
- Radiation Therapy: Often used in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy, especially if the entire tumour cannot be surgically removed.
- Targeted Therapy: In some cases, treatments that target specific aspects of cancer cells may be used.
What support can we give for Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma?
Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
