What is a Desmoids Tumour?
A desmoid tumour is an abnormal growth arising from the connective tissues of the body. Connective tissues are tissues that provide strength and flexibility to bones, ligaments, and muscles. It usually develops as a single tumour, but cases of multiple desmoids tumours have also been reported.
What is a Testicular Desmoids Tumour?
A desmoid testicular tumour is a tumour that arises from the connective tissue of the testis and the spermatic cord. This is a benign (non-malignant) tumour that does not spread to other parts of the body but can invade the underlying tissues of the affected area. Testicular desmoid tumours also tend to recur after surgical removal of the tumour.
Disease Etiology (Causes)
There are no well-known causes, however, certain genetic mutations (defective alterations in genes) in the beta-catenin and adenomatosis polyposis coli are considered responsible for the development of a testicular desmoid cyst.
