What is Storiform-Pleomorphic Tumour?

Storiform-pleomorphic tumour is a rare and complex form of soft tissue sarcoma. The term “storiform” refers to the unique ‘mat-like’ arrangement of tumour cells when observed under a microscope, while “pleomorphic” denotes the presence of cells of varying shapes and sizes. These tumours often originate in connective or soft tissue, and their behaviour can range from relatively indolent (slow-growing) to highly aggressive.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a storiform-pleomorphic tumour largely depend on the tumour’s size and location but typically include:

  • A palpable lump or swelling in the affected area.
  • Pain or discomfort, particularly if the tumour compresses nearby nerves or muscles.
  • The restricted movement if the tumour is located near joints.
  • In more aggressive cases, systemic symptoms like weight loss, fatigue, and malaise might occur.

Disease Aetiology (Causes)

The exact cause of storiform-pleomorphic tumours is not fully understood. Genetic mutations, environmental factors, and a history of radiation exposure are considered potential contributing factors.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing a storiform-pleomorphic tumour involves:

  • Physical Examination: To assess any visible or palpable lumps.
  • Imaging Studies: MRI, CT scans, or ultrasound to evaluate the tumour’s size, depth, and impact on surrounding tissues.
  • Biopsy: A tissue sample is crucial for a definitive diagnosis, involving histopathological examination.

Treatment

Treatment for storiform-pleomorphic tumours may include:

  • Surgery: The primary treatment approach, aims to remove the tumour with clear margins.
  • Radiation Therapy: Often used post-surgery, especially if there’s a high risk of recurrence or if complete removal isn’t possible.
  • Chemotherapy: May be considered in aggressive cases or if the tumour has metastasized.
  • Targeted Therapy: In cases where specific genetic mutations are present, targeted therapies can be effective.

What support can we give for Storiform-Pleomorphic Tumour?
