What is Scirrhous Ductal Carcinoma of the Breast?
Scirrhous ductal carcinoma is a rare subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. A clear clinical sign is the presence of a hard lump in the Breast. It can metastasize (spread of the tumour from its place of origin to other parts of the body). Scirrhous means hard, slow-growing cancer.Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause. However, certain genetic mutations are thought to be responsible for the development of primary breast lymphoma.Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are- Presence of a hard lump or mass in the breast
- In advanced cases it can also involve lymph nodes thus enlargement and swelling of the lymph nodes can be seen
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to diagnose scirrhous carcinoma of the breast, its size, and spread in the body.- Mammography ( X-Ray breast)
- CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan to see the size, site, and extent of the tumour.
- Skin biopsy
- FNA( Fine needle aspiration) or core needle biopsy; are diagnostic procedures in which a sample of cells from a mass or lump is taken using a fine needle, which is then examined under a microscope.
- Histopathological examination
Treatment
Surgical removal of the affected breast (mastectomy) or the tumour, the affected lymph nodes, along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, is the main treatment option in cases in which cancer spreads to the entire breast and the surrounding lymph nodes in the body.What Support can we Give for Scirrhous Ductal Carcinoma of the Breast?
