What is Pineoblastoma (Spinal Cord)?
Pineoblastoma (spinal cord) is a type of cancer that originates from the uncontrolled division or multiplication of parenchymal cells that make up the pineal gland of the brain. The pineal gland is a gland that is found in the centre of the brain and releases a hormone named melatonin which plays role in the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Pineoblastoma (spinal cord) develops as a result of metastasis (spread of a tumour from its place of origin to other parts of the body) of tumour cells from the brain to the spinal cord and is more common in young children. One of the important reasons for the metastasis of pineoblastoma is the seeding of tumour cells during surgery. It predominates in women compared to men.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of Pineoblastoma (spinal cord).
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Difficulty with eye movements
- Walking difficulty
- Unable to maintain balance
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are;
- Imaging techniques like Chest X-ray, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan to see the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour biopsy (tumour biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue for histopathological examination)
- USG-guided fine needle aspiration cytology
Treatment
Radiotherapy is the main treatment option for spinal cord tumours because it preserves the neurological functions of the spinal cord. Other treatment options are chemotherapy and surgical removal of the treatment.
