What is Parathyroid Hormone-related Peptide Secreting Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours?

Parathyroid hormone-related peptide secreting neuroendocrine tumours of the pancreas is a very rare type of malignant tumour (cancerous) that arises from neural crest cells. Neural crest cells are cells in the developing embryo that form various types of tissues.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of parathyroid hormone-related peptide secreting pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours.

Signs and symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • Palpable (felt able) mass in the abdomen
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • A lump in the neck
  • Weakness of the muscles
  • Difficulty in speaking or swallowing
  • Increase in blood calcium levels
  • Kidney stones
  • Pain in the bones

     Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Urine complete examination (UCE)
  • Serum calcium levels
  • CT- scan, MRI, and USG (Ultrasonography) to assess the size, site, and extent of the cancer of the pancreas and thyroid
  • FNA (Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the tumour cells)

Treatment

Surgical removal of the pancreatic tumour is the main treatment. To control the elevated level of calcium in the blood, pharmacological (drug) methods are also used, diuretic drugs (drugs that promote urination) are prescribed for this, and somatostatin analogues are also prescribed to improve the condition of patients. Palliative chemotherapy and blocking the blood supply to a pancreatic tumour by hepatic artery embolization are also effective treatment options.
