What is Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma? Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that arises from cartilage-producing tissues. This type of chondrosarcoma is unique due to its mesenchymal origin, meaning it comes from connective tissue, and is characterized by a mixture of mature cartilage and undifferentiated small round cells. It typically affects younger adults and can occur in various body parts, including bones and soft tissues. Symptoms The symptoms of Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma can vary depending on the tumour’s location but generally include:
- Pain and swelling in the affected area.
- A palpable lump if the tumour is close to the skin surface.
- Symptoms related to the compression of nearby organs or nerves, such as difficulty breathing if the tumour is in the chest, or neurological symptoms if it’s near the spine.
- Reduced range of motion if the tumour is near a joint.
Disease Aetiology (Causes) The exact cause of Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma is unknown. Like many cancers, it is believed to result from genetic mutations, but specific risk factors have not been clearly identified. Diagnosis Diagnosing Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma involves several diagnostic steps:
- Imaging Studies: MRI, CT scans, and X-rays are used to visualize the tumour’s size, location, and impact on surrounding structures.
- Biopsy: A sample of the tumour tissue is examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
- Bone Scans or PET Scans: These may be used to determine if the cancer has spread.
Treatment Treatment for Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma typically includes:
- Surgery: The primary treatment approach aims to remove the tumour completely.
- Radiation Therapy: Often used in conjunction with surgery, especially if the entire tumour cannot be removed.
- Chemotherapy: May be considered, particularly for tumours that have spread or are not fully resectable.
What support can we give for Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma?
Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
