What Is Malignant Schwannoma?
Malignant schwannoma, also known as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST), is a rare type of cancer that originates from the Schwann cells, which are responsible for the myelin sheath covering nerves. While it typically arises in association with peripheral nerves, its occurrence in the liver is exceedingly rare. These tumours are aggressive and can grow rapidly, posing significant challenges for treatment and management.
Symptoms
Given the rarity of malignant schwannoma in the liver, symptoms can vary widely but may include:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort, particularly in the upper abdomen
- A palpable mass in the abdomen
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue and weakness
- Jaundice, if the tumour compresses bile ducts
- Nausea and loss of appetite
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of malignant schwannoma is not fully understood. However, individuals with certain genetic conditions, such as Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), are at an increased risk of developing these tumours. Other risk factors may include previous radiation exposure and certain chemical exposures, although the link to liver-specific tumours remains unclear.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing a malignant schwannoma of the liver involves:
- Imaging studies, including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to visualize the liver tumour.
- Biopsy of the liver tissue for histopathological examination, which is crucial for confirming the diagnosis.
- Additional tests, such as PET scans, may be used to assess the extent of the disease and check for metastasis.
Treatment
Treatment options for malignant schwannoma of the liver include:
- Surgery is the primary treatment approach, aiming to remove the tumour completely. This can be challenging depending on the tumour’s size and location.
- Chemotherapy and radiation therapy may be considered, especially if complete surgical resection is not possible or if the tumour has metastasized. The effectiveness of these treatments varies.
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are emerging treatment options being explored in clinical trials for some patients, depending on the tumour’s genetic makeup.
What support can we give for the Malignant Schwannoma of the Liver?
Malignant Schwannoma of the Liver is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Malignant Schwannoma of the Liver, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
