What is Leiomyosarcoma of the Esophagus?
Leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus or Esophageal leiomyosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that originates from the smooth muscle cells in the esophagus, the muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach. This type of sarcoma is part of a group of cancers known as soft tissue sarcomas and is distinct from more common types of esophageal cancer, which typically originate from the lining cells.
Symptoms
Symptoms of leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus may include:
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), initially with solid foods and eventually with liquids.
- Chest pain or discomfort, often mistaken for heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux.
- Unintentional weight loss.
- Vomiting, which may include blood if the tumour causes bleeding.
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the chest.
- Fatigue and weakness.
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus is not well understood. It is believed to arise from mutations in the DNA of smooth muscle cells, but what triggers these mutations is unclear. There are no specific known risk factors for this rare type of cancer.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus typically involves:
- Endoscopy: A procedure using a flexible tube with a camera to visually examine the esophagus and to obtain a biopsy of any abnormal tissue.
- Imaging Studies: Such as CT scans, MRI, or PET scans, to assess the size of the tumour and to check for metastasis.
- Biopsy: A microscopic examination of the tissue sample is crucial for a definitive diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment for leiomyosarcoma of the esophagus may include:
- Surgery: The primary treatment approach is to remove the tumour, which may involve part or all of the esophagus.
- Radiation Therapy: May be used post-surgery or in cases where surgery is not feasible, to help control symptoms and reduce the size of the tumour.
- Chemotherapy: Often used in combination with radiation therapy, especially if the cancer has spread.
- Targeted Therapy: Emerging as a treatment option for some types of sarcomas, depending on the specific genetic makeup of the tumour.
What support can we give for the Leiomyosarcoma of the Esophagus?
Leiomyosarcoma of the Esophagus is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Leiomyosarcoma of the Esophagus, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
