What is Clear Cell Chondrosarcoma of Bone?

Clear cell chondrosarcoma of bone is a rare type of cancer that arises from the cartilage cells of the bone. It is a slow-growing tumour and has the least tendency to spread to other parts of the body. It usually comes from the long bones of the arms, legs, spinal cord bones, and hip bones. It also has a recurring tendency.

Disease Epidemiology

Clear cell chondrosarcoma of the bone is a rare type of cancer, accounting for less than 2% of all types of chondrosarcomas. It is more common in males as compared to females. It is usually develops in the fifth decade of life.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of clear cell chondrosarcoma of bone.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are;

  • In most cases, dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma is painful
  • Pain at the site of the tumour
  • Pain with or without any major pathological changes
  • Inflammation or swelling at the site of the tumour
  • Burning or tingling sensation at the affected part
  • The tumour is more likely to become metastatic

   Diagnosis

Definite diagnostic tests to diagnose are

  • Tumour biopsy and histopathology
  • Cytogenetic study of the specimen
  • Radiological techniques like CT scan, MRI, USG, and X-ray are also recommended for locating the size and site of the tumour.

Treatment

Currently, surgical resection of part of the tumour, together with the removal of some healthy tissue in the surroundings and preservation of the affected limb, remains the preferred treatment option. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the treatment options for tumours that spread to distant parts of the body and are not confined to their site of origin.
