What is a Meningioma?
A meningioma is a tumor of the meninges. The meninges are the three layers of membrane that cover the brain and spinal cord. These membranes provide support and blood supply to the brain, spinal cord, and skull. Meningiomas are low-grade tumors. These are low-grade tumors. Low-grade tumors are tumors that did not grow rapidly and did not spread to distant parts of the body.What is an Atypical Meningioma?
Atypical meningioma is a type of cancer of the meninges. Atypical meningioma is a mild grade tumor of the meninges, mild grade tumors usually recur after being removed through surgery.Disease Etiology (Causes)
There is no well-known cause. However certain genetic mutations (changes in genes), exposure to radiations and radiation therapy, and neurofibromatosis type 2 are the possible risk factors behind the development of atypical meningioma.Disease Epidemiology
Atypical meningioma is more common in men. The average age of atypical meningioma development is 60 years, the risk of developing the disease increases with age. It is more common in black people than in whites and Asians.Signs and Symptoms
The symptom of oligodendroglioma depends on the site of origin and size of the tumor. The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are- Headache
- Seizures (Fits)
- Body weakness
- Numbness of the body
- Problems with balance and movement
- Behavior changes
- Changes in personality
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are- Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-scan (computerized tomography), PET-scan (Positron emission tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumor.
