What is Angiosarcoma of the Vulva?

Angiosarcoma of the vulva is an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer that originates from the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels of the vulvar region. This form of cancer is part of the soft tissue sarcoma group and tends to grow and spread rapidly.

Symptoms

Symptoms of angiosarcoma of the vulva can include:

  • A lump, swelling, or lesion on the vulva
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • Pain or discomfort in the vulvar region
  • Changes in the skin of the vulva, such as bruises or rashes that do not go away

Disease Aetiology (Causes)

The exact cause of angiosarcoma of the vulva is unknown. Factors that may increase the risk of developing angiosarcoma include older age, exposure to radiation, and certain inherited syndromes, though these factors are not specific to the vulva.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of angiosarcoma of the vulva typically involves:

  • Detailed medical history and physical examination
  • Biopsy of the suspicious area to examine the cells under a microscope
  • Imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to determine the extent and spread of the cancer

Treatment

The treatment for angiosarcoma of the vulva often includes:

  • Surgery: The first-line treatment usually involves the removal of the tumour and a margin of healthy tissue surrounding it.
  • Radiation therapy: This can be used post-surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells, or as a primary treatment if surgery is not an option.
  • Chemotherapy: Given the aggressive nature of angiosarcoma, chemotherapy may be used, particularly if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

What Support can we Give for Angiosarcoma of the Vulva?

Angiosarcoma of the Vulva is rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Angiosarcoma of the Vulva, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
