What is Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma?
Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is a rapidly growing type of cancer that usually develops in the soft tissues such as muscles and tendons. It can develop anywhere in the soft tissues of the body but most commonly it develops in the soft tissues of the legs, arms, and abdomen. In very rare cases it can also develop in the bones particularly leg bones. It tends to metastasize (spread to the distant part of the body from its site of origin) to the other parts of the body, particularly the lungs.
Disease Etiology
There is no well-known cause; however, Paget’s disease, certain prior radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatments are the risk factors for the development of malignant fibrous histiocytoma.
Disease Epidemiology
It is a rare condition that usually affects people between the ages of 50 and 70; however, it can develop at any age. It is slightly more common in males than females.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Rapidly growing soft tissue mass or lump in the thigh which is usually pain less
- Rapid heartbeat
- Feeling tired and hungry without doing any physical activity
- Fever, Weight loss, and excessive sweating at advance stages of the disease
Diagnosis
The flowing diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis these are.
- Imaging diagnostic techniques such as X-Ray, CT scan, and PET scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour Biopsy
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumour or affected part is the main treatment option. Other treatment options are radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The choice of the correct treatment option depends on several factors such as the nature of the cancer cells, the size, extent, and metastasis of the tumour, the patient’s age, the patient’s health status, the patient’s body weight, etc.
