What Is Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Heart?
Rhabdomyosarcoma of the heart is an extremely rare type of cancer that arises from the striated muscle cells. Typically affecting children and young adults, rhabdomyosarcoma is more commonly found in other parts of the body, such as the head, neck, and genitourinary tract. However, on rare occasions, it can develop in the heart, where it presents unique challenges for diagnosis and treatment.
Symptoms
The symptoms of cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma can vary significantly depending on the tumour’s location within the heart and may include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, especially with exertion.
- Chest pain or discomfort.
- Swelling of the legs, ankles, or abdomen due to fluid accumulation.
- Palpitations or irregular heartbeats.
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting spells.
- Unexplained fatigue or weakness.
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of rhabdomyosarcoma, including cases affecting the heart, is not well understood. Genetic mutations and familial cancer syndromes have been implicated in some cases, but many occur sporadically without a clear predisposing factor.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing rhabdomyosarcoma of the heart involves several steps, including:
- Imaging studies such as echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or computed tomography (CT) scans to visualize the tumour.
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) to detect any abnormalities in the heart’s electrical activity.
- Biopsy of the tumour, if possible, to confirm the diagnosis through histological examination.
Treatment
Treatment for cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma typically includes a combination of therapies, such as:
- Surgery to remove the tumour, although complete resection may be challenging depending on the tumour’s size and location.
- Chemotherapy, which is often the cornerstone of treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, to target cancer cells throughout the body.
- Radiation therapy, used in certain cases to shrink the tumour before surgery or to target residual disease.
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are being explored as potential treatments, especially for cases that do not respond to conventional treatments.
What support can we give for the Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Heart?
Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Heart is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Heart, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
