Neuroblastoma – Symptoms, Treatment & Support

What is Neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that arises from a specific type of nerve tissue, mostly immature nerve cells or tissues. The most common sites for neuroblastoma are adrenal nerve tissue, while other common sites are the neck, chest, abdomen, and spinal cord.

Disease Causes

A certain genetic mutation (abnormal change in genes) in the early stages of development, when the baby is in the womb of the mother, is considered to be the cause of neuroblastoma.

Disease Epidemiology

It is common in children, especially those under 5 years of age, and less commonly in older children. It is the third most common cancer in the world after blood and brain cancers.

Signs and Symptoms

General signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma are given below.

  • Pain in the bones
  • A mass or lump in the abdomen, neck, or chest
  • A blue color mass or lump under the skin
  • Constant fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Constant fatigue

  Signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma depend upon the site of origination of the tumour.

Signs and symptoms of abdominal neuroblastoma:

The patient may suffer from pain in the abdomen, a painful lump or mass in the abdomen, and changes in bowel habits (defecation habits) such as constant constipation or diarrhea.

Signs and Symptoms of Neuroblastoma in the Chest:

The patient may suffer from a cough, difficulty in breathing, and drooping eyelids if the tumour originates from the nerve tissues of the chest.

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • (Computerized tomography) CT-chest and PET scans are standard imaging techniques to rule out mediastinal neuroblastoma.
  • ECG
  • Echocardiogram
  • Tumour biopsy and histopathological examination

Treatment

The main treatment options are surgical removal of the tumour chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
