What is Neuroblastoma?
Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that arises from a specific type of nerve tissue, mostly immature nerve cells or tissues. The most common sites for neuroblastoma are adrenal nerve tissue, while other common sites are the neck, chest, abdomen, and spinal cord.
Disease Causes
A certain genetic mutation (abnormal change in genes) in the early stages of development, when the baby is in the womb of the mother, is considered to be the cause of neuroblastoma.
Disease Epidemiology
It is common in children, especially those under 5 years of age, and less commonly in older children. It is the third most common cancer in the world after blood and brain cancers.

- A mass or lump in the abdomen, neck, or chest
- A blue color mass or lump under the skin
- Constant fever
- Unexplained weight loss
- Constant fatigue
Signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma depend upon the site of origination of the tumour.
Signs and symptoms of abdominal neuroblastoma:

The patient may suffer from a cough, difficulty in breathing, and drooping eyelids if the tumour originates from the nerve tissues of the chest.
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are
- (Computerized tomography) CT-chest and PET scans are standard imaging techniques to rule out mediastinal neuroblastoma.
- ECG
- Echocardiogram
- Tumour biopsy and histopathological examination
Treatment
The main treatment options are surgical removal of the tumour chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
What Support can we Give for Neuroblastoma ?
Neuroblastoma Neuroblastoma is rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Neuroblastoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
