What is Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma?
A malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a rapidly growing type of cancer that usually develops in the soft tissues such as muscles and tendons. It can develop anywhere in the soft tissues of the body but most commonly it develops in the legs, arms, and abdomen. In very rare cases it can also develop in the bones particularly leg bones. It tends to metastasize (spread to the distant part of the body from its site of origin) to the other parts of the body particularly the lungs.Disease Etiology
There is no well-known cause; however, Paget’s disease, certain prior radiotherapy or chemotherapy treatments are the risk factors for the development of malignant fibrous histiocytoma.Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are- Rapidly growing soft tissue mass or lump in the thigh
- Rapid heartbeat
- Excessive sweating
- Feeling tired and hungry without doing any physical activity
- Fever
- Weight loss
Diagnosis
The flowing diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis these are.- Imaging diagnostic techniques such as X-Ray, CT scan, and PET scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
