What is Choroid Plexus Xanthogranuloma?
Choroid plexus xanthogranuloma is a rare type of tumour of the brain and spinal cord. These tumours usually do not produce any symptoms and are often diagnosed incidentally.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause however, certain chromosomal and genetic mutations (false changes) are considered responsible for the development of choroid plexus xanthogranuloma.
Signs and Symptoms
Choroid plexus xanthogranulomas typically do not present any symptoms. In rare instances, the tumour may grow large enough to exert pressure on the brain, resulting in symptoms. Hemorrhage is a potential complication of these tumors.
Diagnosis
To establish a diagnosis, the following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used:
- Imaging tests such as X-ray, CT-scan (computerised tomography), and PET-scan (Positron Emission Tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumour.
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Lumbar Puncture
- Tumour biopsy and histopathological examination
Treatment
These are usually benign (non-cancerous) tumours and do not require any treatment.
