What is the Choroid Plexus Papilloma of the Brain?
Choroid plexus papillomas are rare, benign (non-cancerous) brain tumours that originate in the brain’s ventricles. They typically affect children, usually arising from the lateral ventricles, but can also occur in adults, where they more commonly originate from the fourth ventricle.
What are the ventricles of the brain?
There are four hollow spaces in the brain called ventricles of the brain. Their function is to produce and secrete cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). “The fluid is mainly produced to protect and maintain your central nervous system.
Causes
There is no well-known cause however, it is believed that certain mutations (false changes) in genes are considered responsible for the development of choroid plexus papilloma of the brain.
Signs and symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms:
- Headache
- Hydrocephalus (a condition where the head gets bigger because too much fluid builds up in the brain)
- Papilledema (swelling of the optic disc of the eye)
Diagnosis
A diagnosis can be made using the following diagnostic tests and procedures:
- Imaging such as X-rays, CT scans (Computerized Tomography), and PET scans (Positron Emission Tomography) help determine the size, location, type of tumour.
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Lumbar Puncture
- Tumour biopsy and histopathological examination (examination of tissue samples)
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumour, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted immunotherapy are the main treatment options for choroid plexus papilloma of the brain.
What support can we give for the Choroid Plexus Papilloma?
Choroid plexus papilloma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Choroid plexus papilloma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
