What is Choroid Plexus Carcinoma of the Brain?
Choroid plexus carcinoma of the brain is a type of severe brain malignancy (cancer) that originates from the uncontrolled division of cells that makes the choroid plexus of the brain. Choroid plexus carcinomas of the brain are classified into three grades by the World Health Organization: grade I, II, and III. In spite of having similar pathological features, grade 3 choroid plexus carcinomas have poorer outcomes than WHO grade 1 and grade 2 choroid plexus carcinomas.
Disease Causes
Choroid plexus carcinoma or plexoma typically occurs in children during the first five years of their life. It is a rare tumour, accounting for only 1-4% of brain tumours in children. The cause of the choroid plexoma of the brain is dysfunction of the P53 tumour suppressor gene (TP53)
The most common underlying genetic mechanism identified in their formation is dysfunction of the p53 tumour suppressor gene (TP53).
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following:
- Headache
- Hydrocephalus (Increase in the size of the head caused by abnormal accumulation of fluid present in the brain)
- Papilledema (swelling of the optic disc of the eye)
Diagnosis
A diagnosis can be made using the following diagnostic tests and procedures:
- CT-scans (computerised tomography) and PET-scans (positron emission tomography) are imaging tests used to detect tumour sites, sizes and locations.
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Lumbar puncture
- Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumour, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted immunotherapy are the main treatment options for choroid plexoma of the brain.
