What Is Angiosarcoma of the Liver?
Angiosarcoma of the liver is a rare and aggressive cancer that originates from the blood vessels of the liver. This type of cancer is known for its rapid progression and poor prognosis. Angiosarcomas can affect any part of the body, but when they occur in the liver, they are particularly challenging to treat due to the complex nature of the organ and the cancer’s aggressive behavior.
Symptoms
Symptoms of angiosarcoma of the liver often do not appear until the disease is advanced and may include:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially in the upper right side
- A feeling of fullness after eating only a small amount of food
- Unintended weight loss
- Weakness and fatigue
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen)
- Fever
Disease Aetiology (Causes)
The exact cause of angiosarcoma of the liver is unknown, but several factors may increase the risk of developing this cancer, including:
- Exposure to vinyl chloride, arsenic, and thorium dioxide (Thorotrast), which are known carcinogens
- Chronic infection with certain hepatitis viruses
- Cirrhosis or chronic liver disease
Diagnosis
Diagnosing angiosarcoma of the liver typically involves a combination of:
- Imaging tests, such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to visualize the liver and any abnormal growths
- Blood tests to assess liver function
- A biopsy, where a sample of liver tissue is taken and examined under a microscope for cancer cells
Treatment
Treatment for angiosarcoma of the liver is challenging due to the cancer’s aggressive nature and resistance to conventional therapies. Options may include:
- Surgery to remove the tumour, if it is localized and operable
- Chemotherapy, although the effectiveness is limited
- Radiation therapy, which may be used to relieve symptoms but is not typically curative
- Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are being investigated as potential treatments
What support can we give for the Angiosarcoma of the Liver?
Angiosarcoma of the Liver is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well-known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Angiosarcoma of the Liver, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
