What is Sclerosing Liposarcoma?

Sclerosing liposarcoma is the most common type of soft tissue sarcoma in adults. The term sarcoma is used for a group of cancers that arise from the soft tissues of the body and bones. Sclerosing liposarcoma can occur anywhere in the body but the most commonly affected sites are deep soft tissues of the legs and abdomen.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of sclerosing liposarcoma.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • A gradually growing lump or mass under the skin
  • Pain at the site of the lump or mass
  • Swelling at the site of the lump or mass
  • Weakness in the affected arm or leg

In cases of the sclerosing liposarcoma of the mediastinum, the patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. The mediastinum is a cavity in the chest that consists of the heart, food pipe, thymus gland, and trachea.

  • Pain in the chest
  • Constant cough
  • Difficulty in breathing

Diagnosis

Definite diagnostic tests to diagnose the sclerosing liposarcoma are tumour biopsy and histopathology, Fine needle aspiration cytology, and cytogenetic study of the specimen. Radiological techniques like CT scan, MRI, USG, and X-ray also recommended locating the size and site of the tumour.

Treatment

For the tumour which is not widespread, wide local surgical excision of the tumour is the most effective treatment option. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the treatment options for tumours that spread to distant parts of the body and are not confined to their site of origin.

What Support can we Give for Sclerosing Liposarcoma?

Sclerosing Liposarcoma is rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Sclerosing Liposarcoma, we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
