What is Plexiform Fibrohistiocytic Tumour?
Plexiformfibrohistiocytic tumour is a low-grade malignant (cancerous) tumour that usually arises from the soft tissues of the skin of the upper extremities (shoulder, arms, and hands), lower extremities (legs and feet), and in very rare cases head and neck.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause; however certain genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumours.
Disease Epidemiology
It usually affects children and young adults. It is slightly more common in females than males.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- A small, slowly growing mass in the upper and deeper layers of the skin of the arms, hands, legs, feet, or head and neck
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic test and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis.
- Imaging techniques such as X-Ray, USG, CT-Scan, and MRI to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Skin biopsy for histopathological examination.
Treatment
Complete surgical removal of the tumour along with the removal of some healthy surrounding tissues is the main treatment option.
