What is Pagetoid Reticulosis?
Pagetoid reticulosis is a rare skin disorder characterized by the presence of a slowly growing, single, reddish, raised cutaneous lesion (an abnormal mass) that consists of the malignant proliferation of T lymphocytes. T lymphocyte is a type of white blood cells. Neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, T cells, and B cells are types of white blood cells. Lymphocytes (white blood cells) help to fight infection and microorganisms that enter the body. Hepatosplenic T cells lymphoma is usually incurable.
Disease Etiology (Causes)
There is no well-known cause, however certain genetic mutations (faulty alteration in the genes) are considered responsible for the development of pagetoid reticulosis.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Abnormal red spots of elevated margins on the skin with redness and irritation
- Raised bumps on the skin
- Skin lesions
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis these are
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Diagnostic imaging techniques such as USG, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan can be used to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Skin or lymph nodes marrow biopsy
Treatment
The most common treatment options are radiation therapy and surgical removal of the tumour.
