What is Neurocytoma (Spinal Cord)?
Neurocytoma is a rare type of tumour of the brain and spinal cord that usually arises from the ventricular system of the brain and in rare cases; it can also arise from the spinal cord. Neurocytoma (spinal cord) commonly affects the cervical (upper part of the spine) or thoracic (upper and middle part of the spine).
Disease Epidemiology
Neurocytoma (Spinal Cord) predominately develops in a younger population. It is equally common in both males and females.
Disease causes
There is no well-known cause, however hereditary and genetic mutations (faulty alteration in the genes) are considered responsible for the development of Neurocytoma (Spinal Cord).
Signs and Symptoms
- Pain in the back
- Weakness or loss of sensation in arms and legs
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Seizures( Fits)
- Changes in personality or behaviour
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are;
- Imaging techniques like Chest X-ray, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan to see the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour biopsy (tumour biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue for histopathological examination)
- USG-guided fine needle aspiration cytology
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumour along with radiation therapy is the main treatment option. Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy are also significant treatment options for spinal cord tumours because it preserves the neurological functions of the spinal cord. The other treatment options are surgical removal of the tumour and targeted immunotherapy.
