What is the Lipid Cell Tumour of the Ovary?
Lipid cell tumour of the ovary is a rare type of tumour that arises from the cells of the ovary with marked symptoms of excessive hair on the face and neck, prolonged menstrual gaps, deepening of the voice and the development of other masculine features such as male pattern hair loss, acne, increased muscularity and increased sexual derive in females.
Disease Causes
In 77% of the cases lipid cell tumour of the ovary is virilizing (tumours that secrete male androgen hormones) in nature, while in 10% of the cases, it is associated with diseases named Cushing syndrome. Cushing syndrome is a disease in which an excessive amount of cortisol is produced in the body which leads to obesity, high blood pressure, irregularity of the hormones, and weakening of the bones. Signs and Symptoms The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- A mass or lump in the abdomen
- Pain in the abdomen in a few cases
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Obesity
- Excessive hair on the face and neck
- Deepening of the voice
- Male pattern hair loss in females
- Acne
- Increased sexual drive
Diagnosis
Following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make the diagnosis. These are
- Complete blood count ( CBC)
- Serum tumour markers
- Imaging techniques like ultrasonography (USG), CT-scan, MRI, and X-Ray to detect the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Pelvic examination through per-speculum examination of the vagina, cervix, and ovaries. A speculum is a gynecological instrument used to visualize the vaginal wall, cervix, uterus, and ovaries to detect any abnormality.
- CA-125
- Serum B-HCG levels
- Alpha-fetoprotein levels (AFP)
Treatment
Surgical removal of the tumour is the first-line treatment for localized ovarian tumours. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy is the treatment option for metastatic cases of lipid cell tumour of the ovary. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are emphasized in this potentially malignant and disfiguring androgenic tumour that is readily amenable to surgery.
