What is Leiomyosarcoma?
Leiomyosarcoma is a rare cancer of smooth muscles. These rare tumors most commonly develop in the smooth muscles of the abdomen, but may affect other smooth muscles of the body like smooth muscles of the uterus, blood vessels, and skin. Smooth muscles are found in the lining of various organs of the body like the stomach, urinary bladder, uterus, blood vessels, liver, pancreas, and intestines.
Disease Epidemiology
Approximately 1 in 100,000 people are diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma (LMS) yearly. It is one of the most prevalent types of soft tissue sarcomas (tumours of soft tissues and bones), accounting for 10 to 20 % of new cases.
Causes
There is no exact well-known cause is found. Certain genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of leiomyosarcoma. Previous exposure to radiation therapy or exposure to certain chemicals or drugs like dioxins, vinyl chloride, and pesticides are risk factors for the development of the tumour.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms may vary according to the involvement of the smooth muscles of a certain organ. Abdominal leiomyosarcoma can grow up to the size of 4 inches (10 centimetres) and can present with the signs and symptoms of palpable abdominal mass/lump or heaviness in the abdomen, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, and weight loss. Leiomyosarcoma of the uterus can show the signs and symptoms of intermenstrual vaginal bleeding (vaginal bleeding is non-menstrual days), unusual vaginal discharge, and frequent urge to urinate (increase the frequency of urination).
Diagnosis
Definite diagnostic tests to diagnose leiomyosarcoma tumours are tumour biopsy and histopathology of the specimen.
Treatment
For the tumour which is not widespread, wide local surgical excision of the tumour is the most effective treatment option. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are treatment options for tumours that spread to distant parts of the body and are not confined to its site of origin.
What support can we give for Leiomyosarcoma?
Leiomyosarcoma is a rare cancer, meaning it is not as well known as other forms of cancer. Without a Ribbon is an Australian organisation that provides support for individuals who suffer from rare cancers. So, we provide a designated platform for Warriors to obtain information specific to their Rare Cancer. We also provide annual opportunities for our Warriors to meet and learn from each other. If you suffer from rare cancer such as Leiomyosarcoma we can help and support you through your journey thanks to the generous donations we receive.
