What is Leiomyosarcoma of the Stomach?

Leiomyosarcoma of the stomach is a rare type of cancer that forms in the smooth muscle cells of the stomach. Smooth muscle cells are found in the walls of various organs and structures such as the stomach, blood vessels, and the female reproductive tract. Leiomyosarcomas are part of a group of cancers called soft tissue sarcomas.

Symptoms

Symptoms of leiomyosarcoma of the stomach can be vague or nonspecific, particularly in the early stages of the disease. They might include:

  • Abdominal discomfort or pain
  • Feeling full quickly when eating
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blood in stool or black stools
  • Nausea and vomiting

Disease Aetiology (Causes)

The exact cause of leiomyosarcoma of the stomach is not known. However, certain factors may increase the risk, including genetic conditions, certain chemicals exposure, and radiation exposure. It’s worth noting that many people with leiomyosarcoma do not have any known risk factors.

Diagnosis

Diagnosing leiomyosarcoma of the stomach may involve:

  • A detailed medical history and physical examination
  • Endoscopy to visually examine the stomach and take biopsy samples
  • Imaging tests such as a CT scan or MRI
  • Laboratory tests including complete blood count and tests for tumour markers

Treatment

Treatment options for leiomyosarcoma of the stomach can include:

  • Surgery: The primary treatment option is to surgically remove the tumour along with a margin of healthy tissue around it.
  • Chemotherapy: It may be used before surgery to shrink the tumour or after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.
  • Radiation Therapy: This might be used after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells, or in advanced cases to relieve symptoms.
  • Targeted Therapy: These drugs specifically target cancer cells and cause less harm to normal cells.
