What Is Craniopharyngioma of the Spinal Cord?
Craniopharyngioma of the spinal cord is a rare type of benign (non-cancerous) tumour that originates from the base of the brain or abnormal growth of the cells of the pituitary gland and spread to the spinal cord. Craniopharyngioma of the spinal cord usually affects children and adults. It tends to recur in approximately 50% of cases. Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause; however, it is believed that abnormal growth of certain types of brain and spinal cord cells during embryonic development is the main cause behind the development of craniopharyngioma of the spinal cord.
Signs and Symptoms
The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are
- Blurred vision (blurred eyesight)
- Constant Headache
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Low sexual derive
- Absence of menstruation in females
- Weight gain
- Constant feeling of tiredness
- Dizziness
- Constipation
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are;
- Imaging techniques like Chest X-ray, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan to see the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour biopsy (tumour biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue for histopathological examination)
- USG-guided fine needle aspiration cytology
- Lumbar Puncture and cerebrospinal fluid analysis
Treatment
Surgical resection (surgical removal of the damaged part of the body) of the tumour is the main treatment; other treatment options are chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
