Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia – Symptoms, Treatment & Support

What is Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia?

Chronic myelogenous leukemia is a type of white blood cell cancer. It accounts for approximately 15-25% of all white blood cell cancers.

Disease Causes

There is no well-known cause; however, exposure to certain ionizing radiation is a risk factor for the development of chronic myeloid leukemia.

Disease Epidemiology

It is more common in men than women. More common in older people, the average age at diagnosis is 65 years.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • Constant fever
  • Constant fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Excessive sweating at the night
  • Easy bleeding and bruising on injury
  • Feeling of fullness after eating a small amount of food
  • Pain in the bones

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are Following Laboratory investigations, procedures, and genetics studies are required to make an appropriate diagnosis.

  • Complete blood count (CBC) with peripheral blood smears
  • Liver function tests (LFTs)
  • Renal Functional Tests (RFTs)
  • Blood electrolyte levels
  • Coagulation profile: Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time

Gold standard/definitive tests are:

  • Bone marrow smears
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Flow cytometry
  • Molecular and cytogenetic analysis for cytogenetic abnormalities.

Treatment

Treatment options include chemotherapy; radiotherapy, cancer cells specific targeted therapies, and bone marrow transplant are the main treatment options.
