What is Choriocarcinoma of the Brain?

Choriocarcinoma is a rare type of tumor resulting from the abnormal growth of cells that normally form the placenta in the uterus. The placenta is an organ that normally develops during pregnancy and provides protection and nourishment to the fetus. It is a very rare type of tumor that sometimes spreads to the brain. Choriocarcinoma can also spread to the lungs and liver. It develops more often in women of childbearing age.

  • Irregular vaginal bleeding (bleeding from the vagina during pregnancy or between two menstrual periods)
  • vomiting
  • loss of consciousness
  • pain in the abdomen
  • high blood pressure due to unknown reason
  • Constant headache

 Diagnosis

The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • Imaging tests such as X-Ray, CT-scan (computerized tomography), PET-scan (Positron emission tomography) help detect the site, size, and location of the tumor.
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Lumbar Puncture
  • Tumor biopsy and histopathological examination
  • B-HCG

Treatment

Surgery along with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted immunotherapy are the main treatment options for choriocarcinoma of the brain.

What Support can we Give for Choriocarcinoma of the Brain?
