What is Anaplastic Oligoastrocytoma of the Spinal Cord?
Anaplastic oligoastrocytoma of the Spinal Cord is a rare type of slow-growing spinal cord tumour that usually develops in adults between the 3rd and 5th decade of their life. Only 10-15% of anaplastic oligoastrocytomas of the spinal cord are high-grade tumours. High-grade tumours are those that grow and spread rapidly to other distant parts of the body. It is less common in children. It is slightly more predominant in males than females.
Disease Causes
There is no well-known cause, however, certain hereditary and genetic mutations are considered responsible for the development of anaplastic oligoastrocytoma of the spinal cord. Moreover, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, certain chemicals, ionizing radiation or poor diet, and prolonged stressful conditions can trigger these hereditary and genetic tendencies that are responsible for the development of anaplastic oligoastrocytoma of the spinal cord.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms of anaplastic astrocytoma of the brain depend upon the site, size, and extent of the tumour. Most of the symptoms develop due to the increased pressure of the tumour on the deep and nearby parts of the brain. Anaplastic astrocytoma of the brain develops over a prolonged period but grows rapidly. The common symptoms are
- Pain in the back
- Constant feeling of tiredness
- Drowsiness
- Difficulty in walking and writing
- Loss of sensory ability from arms and legs
- Urinary dribbling/leakage
- Difficulty in emptying the urinary bladder
Diagnosis
The following diagnostic tests and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are;
- Imaging techniques like Chest X-ray, CT-scan, MRI, and PET scan to see the site, size, and extent of the tumour.
- Tumour biopsy (tumour biopsy to remove a small sample of tissue for histopathological examination)
- USG-guided fine needle aspiration cytology
Treatment
Surgical resection (surgical removal of the damaged part of the body) of the tumour is the main treatment; other treatment options are chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
