What is Aldosteronoma?

Aldosteroneoma is a tumour that results from the rapid, uncontrolled division of cells in the adrenal gland, commonly called aldosteronoma. Aldosterone is an adrenal hormone that is responsible for regulating blood pressure by regulating fluid, sodium, and potassium levels in the body. Aldosteronoma is responsible for the overproduction of the hormone aldosterone; this overproduction is responsible for high blood pressure and low blood potassium levels. Aldosteronoma is usually a benign tumour in very rare cases it can become cancer.

Disease Causes

The reason for the development of this aldosteronoma (aldosterone-secreting tumour) is unknown. However, it is believed that certain hereditary and genetic mutations (faulty alterations in the genes) are responsible for the development of aldosteronoma. It usually develops between the ages of 30-50.

Signs and Symptoms

The patient may suffer from the following signs and symptoms. These are

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Body and muscle cramps
  • Constant fatigue
  • Headache
  • Excessive thirst
  • A frequent and larger quantity of urine

Diagnosis

The following diagnostic techniques and procedures can be used to make a diagnosis. These are

  • Serum aldosterone level
  • Serum renin level
  • Adrenal vein blood test
  • Salt loading test
  • CT sac of the abdomen (CT scans of the abdomen in patients with aldosteronoma may show a tumour or an enlarged adrenal gland).

Treatment

Surgical removal of the tumour is the main treatment option.

What Support can we Give for Aldosteronoma?
